U.S. Milk Production Rose During First Quarter of 2018

Milk production in the United States during the first quarter totaled 54.4 billion pounds, up 1.5 percent from the same three months last year.

The average number of milk cows during the quarter was 9.41 million head, 9,000 head more than the fourth quarter of 2017, and 38,000 more than the same period last year.

During the month of March, production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 2,038 pounds, 22 pounds above the same month a year ago. This is the highest production per cow ever for the month of March, according to USDA records.
