Centre, Dauphin, Northampton Wineries Win Best of Farm Show
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 01/13/2021

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding announced three Pennsylvania wineries were awarded Best in Show in three overall categories in the 2021 Pennsylvania Farm Show Wine Competition.

Wines submitted to the competition must be made of 75 percent Pennsylvania fruit. This year's competition included entries from 26 Pennsylvania wineries.

Pennsylvania is the fifth largest producer of grapes nationally, with more than 270 wineries producing over five million bottles of wine annually.

The Vineyard at Hershey of Middletown, Dauphin County, was honored with a Double Gold and Best of Show Dry Wine with Firefly (2019). Firefly is a full-bodied red wine with the perfect blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot combining dark fruit with notes of plum, currant and spice. This wine has a warm, pleasant finish.

Mount Nittany Vineyard & Winery of Centre Hall, Centre County, earned Double Gold and Best of Show Sweet/Dessert Wine with Nittany Mountain Blush (2019). Nittany Mountain Blush is a blend of Steuben and Seyval Blanc. The fresh and light flavor of ripe red berries is balanced by bright refreshing acidity.

Franklin Hill Vineyards of Bangor, Northampton County, won a Gold Medal and Best of Show in Fruit Wine with Blue Hen (2019). Blue Hen is inspired by the vineyard's peacock, Franklin. Blue Hen is made with 100 percent of Noiret grapes bursting with vibrant notes of blackberry.

Pennsylvanians interested in sampling winning wines are encouraged to visit the Pennsylvania Farm Show Trail, an interactive map that features the commercial exhibitors and PA Preferred members who exhibit at the traditional Farm Show. Just search "wine" in the search bar to be directed to Pennsylvania breweries for links to ecommerce websites or physical storefronts where you can purchase their award-winning brews.

"This Farm Show Trail gives Pennsylvanians from all four corners of the commonwealth the opportunity to support our Farm Show exhibitors and agribusinesses from the comfort of their home," said Redding. "While the map was born out of a need to support our commercial exhibitors for this virtual show, I hope it's here to stay."

The Pennsylvania Virtual Farm Show features hundreds of online educational and entertaining events and resources.

The 2021 virtual show runs through Jan. 16 on the Pennsylvania Farm Show Facebook, Instagram, and on the Pennsylvania Cable Network.
