Pennsylvania Peaches Appear to Have Suffered Frost
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 05/03/2016

Pennsylvania had a good week for field activities with an average of 4.5 days suitable for field work. A much cooler week with temperatures reported as a high of 86F, a low of 26F and a state average temperature of 52F.

Finally broken was the perpetual spell of dry weather with welcome rains delivering relief to field crops late in the week.

Some early corn plantings may benefit as a result of the ideal timing, while continued plantings of corn, followed closely by soybeans, will experience better soil conditions from the onset.

Reports of fruit conditions suggest that apples seem very likely to have avoided significant damage from earlier frosts and a normal yield is expected. Unfortunately, peaches appear to have suffered and most predict a low yield for this year.

Field activities, despite receiving welcome interruption from rains, continued throughout the majority of the week and consisted largely of continued corn planting, the start of soybean planting, and the application of herbicides and fertilizer.
