Pennsylvania Ranks First in Value of Distributed Trout

The estimated value of trout distributed in Pennsylvania totaled 14.8 million dollars, up 61 percent from 2017, ranking Pennsylvania first nationally, according to King Whetstone, director of USDA's NASS Northeastern Regional Field Office. Trout distributed for restoration, conservation, enhancement, or recreational purposes, primarily by State and Federal hatcheries, included 1.10 million 12" or longer fish, 4.40 million 6"- 12" fish, and 2.84 million 1"- 6" fish.

The total value of fish sales received by trout growers in Pennsylvania totaled 6.44 million dollars for 2018, an increase of 3 percent from 2017. Pennsylvania accounted for 6 percent of the total value of fish sold in the United States, ranking Pennsylvania third nationally behind Idaho and North Carolina.

The number of trout 12 inches and longer sold during 2017 totaled 1.21 million fish, up 25 percent from the previous year. The average price per pound was $4.28, down 28 cents from 2017. The value of sales for the 2018 marketing year was 5.14 million dollars, up 5 percent from 2017.

The number of 6"- 12" trout sold during 2018 totaled 580 thousand fish, an increase of 9 percent from 2017. The average price per pound was $3.79 during 2018, down 93 cents from the 2017 price. The total value of sales was 1.21 million dollars during 2018, an 8 percent decrease from the previous year.

The number of 1"- 6" trout sold during 2018 totaled 210 thousand, an 83 percent increase from the previous year. The average value per 1,000 fish was $452 during 2018, down 199 dollars from 2017. The total value of sales was 95 thousand dollars, up 27 percent from last year's total.

Total losses of all trout intended for sale were 906 thousand fish during 2018.
