Pennsylvania Hog Inventory Down 3 Percent

Pennsylvania inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1, 2016 was 1.14 million head. This was down 3 percent from June 1, 2015, but up 1 percent from March 1, 2016.

Breeding inventory, at 100 thousand head, was down 5 percent from June 1, 2015 and down 9 percent from the previous quarter.

Market hog inventory, at 1.04 million head, was down 2 percent from last year, but up 2 percent from last quarter.

The March-May 2016 pig crop, at 505 thousand head, was unchanged from 2015. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 49 thousand head, unchanged from 2015. The average pigs saved per litter was 10.30 for the March-May period, the same as last year.
