Wet Conditions Causing Pennsylvania Crop Diseases

Pennsylvania had a good week for field activities with an average of 4.5 days suitable for field work. Temperatures were reported with a high of 82F, a low of 48F and a state average temperature of 66F. Cool weather early in the week with mixed reports of rain scattered across the state.

Finally got most of the oats, corn, and soy beans planted. Now the next job will be getting everything sprayed. Certain varieties of wheat and fields which were not sprayed with a fungicide have very high levels of Fusarium Head Blight. Many of these will also have high levels of mycotoxins. Haymaking is continuing.

Apples are maturing and about the size of a golf ball and peaches are also maturing about golf ball size. Tart Cherries are red and maturing and will be harvested in a few weeks. Sweet cherries will be harvested in the next week or so here. Quality due to wet weather and other weather conditions this spring will be known as harvest approaches. Other fruit is looking pretty good. Strawberries are over for the year and not a very good crop this year due to all the wet weather.

Vegetables are looking better and some are now available at farmers markets and stands in the county. Overall the producers are putting in long hours doing whatever it takes to get their field work started and some planting and harvesting of crops that are ready.
