Red Meat Production Up 8 Percent in June

Commercial red meat production for Pennsylvania totaled 117.9 million pounds in June, up 8 percent from the 109.5 million pounds produced in June 2015, according to King Whetstone, director of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Northeastern Regional Field Office.

Cattle slaughter totaled 81,600 head, up 6 percent from June 2015. The average live weight was up 8 pounds from the previous year, at 1,218 pounds.

Calf slaughter totaled 8,000 head, 8 percent above June 2015. The average live weight was down 4 pounds from last year, at 434 pounds.

Hog slaughter totaled 285,600 head, up 10 percent from June 2015. The average live weight was up unchanged from the previous year, at 268 pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter totaled 6,300 head, 26 percent above last year. The average live weight was 107 pounds, up 2 pounds from June a year ago.

June 2015 contained 22 weekdays (including 0 holiday) and 4 Saturdays. June 2016 contained 22 weekdays (including 0 holiday) and 4 Saturdays.
