BQA National Coordinators Visit Keystone State

The PA Beef Council (PBC) recently helped to organize the National Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) State Coordinators Summer Conference held in State College, Pa.. This event drew BQA program coordinators from all over the country with nearly 60 participants in this year's summer conference.

Conference attendees had the opportunity to tour different segments of the Pennsylvania beef industry to kick off the event on Wednesday, June 6th. Tour sites included a cow-calf operation, a veal farm and a tie-stall dairy facility with a cheese production plant. Each tour site provided a unique experience that helped attendees see the impact the beef industry has on PA agriculture.

The meeting concluded with a tour of the Samuel E. Hayes Livestock Evaluation Center which included a presentation by Dr. Tara Felix, PSU Extension Beef Specialist, on her Holstein dairy steer feed research and Dr. Jonathan Campbell, PSU Meat Extension Specialist doing a meat cutting demonstration.

Chase DeCoite, director of BQA for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association said, "the BQA State Coordinators meeting was a valuable opportunity to strengthen our state-national partnership and provides a unique opportunity for BQA program staff to collaborate with their counterparts from coast to coast. Having the meeting in PA exposed many of the coordinators to Northeast production practices for the first time. We value our partnership with the PA Beef Council and commend them on their leadership within the National Beef Quality Assurance program".
