Keystone Commercial Red Meat Production Down

Commercial red meat production for Pennsylvania totaled 108.4 million pounds in July, down slightly from the 108.7 million pounds produced in July 2015, according to King Whetstone, regional director of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northeastern Regional Field Office.

Cattle slaughter totaled 75.3 thousand head, down 2 percent from July 2015. The average live weight was up 5 pounds from the previous year, at 1,199.

Calf slaughter totaled 6,800 head, down 6 percent from July 2015. The average live weight was up 5 pounds from last year, at 438 pounds.

Hog slaughter totaled 268.4 thousand head, up 2 percent from July 2015. The average live weight was unchanged from the previous year, at 267 pounds.

Sheep slaughter totaled 4.6 thousand head, unchanged last year. The average live weight was 107 pounds, unchanged from July a year ago.
