Pennsylvania Red Meat Production Up 19 Percent

Commercial red meat production for Pennsylvania totaled 126.0 million pounds in August, up 19 percent from the 106.1 million pounds produced in August 2015, according to King Whetstone, regional director of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northeastern Regional Field Office.

Cattle slaughter totaled 87.1 thousand head, up 20 percent from August 2015. The average live weight was up 3 pounds from the previous year, at 1,192. Calf slaughter totaled 7.2 thousand head, up 6 percent from August 2015. The average live weight was down 1 pound from last year, at 440 pounds.

Hog slaughter totaled 316.1 thousand head, up 20 percent from August 2015. The average live weight was down 5 pounds from the previous year, at 265 pounds.

Sheep slaughter totaled 5.8 thousand head, 12 percent above last year. The average live weight was 111 pounds, up 5 pounds from August a year ago.
