Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 08/09/2022

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding Monday called for proposals for $900,000 in research grants through the Center for Poultry & Livestock ExcellenceOpens In A New Window created under the PA Farm Bill.

"Research provides the roots that grow our capacity to tackle costly, complex challenges like the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza crisis we've just weathered," said Redding. "Research feeds innovation and productivity, keeping Pennsylvania's $132.5 billion agriculture industry growing."

Since 2019, the Wolf Administration has invested $4 million in the center to cultivate innovation and strengthen Pennsylvania's animal agriculture sector. The center was a key partner in managing the recent outbreak of avian influenza.

The center invites research proposals that focus on poultry, swine, sheep and goat production, including projects that:

- Advance biosecurity protections and emergency preparation and response;

- Build Pennsylvania's animal agriculture infrastructure, increasing workforce and student use of technology;

- Increase food security by enhancing the state's supply chain and decreasing risks; as well as

- Applied research to address emerging diseases and their economic impact, explore regenerative animal production.

Proposals can be submitted online no later than 11 a.m. Nov. 14. The center's board will review proposals within 30 days.

Complete research guidelines as well as research underway and an archive of funded projects can be found on the center's website.
